‘Internationalising Our Children’

At St Nicholas we feel that providing our pupils with an international dimension to their learning enables them to learn about different countries and cultures and empowers them to see the world through their own eyes.
At Key Stage Two, Spanish is taught to pupils in line with the new Framework for Modern Languages. Through this they learn about Spanish culture and customs to support their intercultural understanding, in addition to learning to speak the language. In Key Stage One, we also encourage the use of informal language teaching, such as songs and games to introduce an understanding of foreign languages.

St Nicholas Primary School is linked with Yi Feng Experimental School in Chongqing, China. This link enables pupils and staff to share ideas and resources and we have several curriculum projects planned for the 2008-9 academic year. We have also been lucky to be involved with teacher exchanges. Our head teacher and one of our senior teachers have been to visit our link school China and we have hosted a visit from the head teacher at Yi Feng. We are hoping to take ten year six children to China in October 2008 to experience the culture and educational system first hand so that they can discuss this with their peers when they return.
